Sustainable DMOs and Destinations
Sustainability is everyone's responsibility but the role of DMOs in achieving sustainability is very critical for a unified front on this matter. We would like to acknowledge and praise sustainable DMOs and sustainable destinations in this blog by compiling a list of favorites. This is open for anyone to post their favorite sustainable DMO and destination. Posts can entail content of other social media platforms; a one sentence summary of the sustainable DMO and destination along with the actual URL link can be posted here. Thank you for your contribution!

I chose the destination Burrowing Owl Estate Winery in British Columbia, Canada! They excel in sustainable practices and can really be a role model for destinations wanting to harmonize with the environment better! I used a Tumblr for this project because it uses the hashtag feature like Twitter, but allows for more character counts and can reach a wider audience! Enjoy!

ReplyDeleteGood evening,
ReplyDeleteMy post is a Storify blog featuring Tourism Vancouver. Together they are working with the City of Vancouver to promote green tourism. The short term goal is to be the greenest city by 2020 and become fully sustainable by 2050. Sustainability to me focuses on sustainable practices to reduce energy consumption. I feel Tourism Vancouver is an excellent example that other DMOs can adopt.

For this project I chose the caribbean destination, Aruba and its DMO Aruba Tourism Authority. According to www.responsibletravel.com, (Links to an external site.) Aruba was awarded the Silver Award in 2015 for the "Best Destination for Responsible Tourism" because of it 2020 Vision project plan where executives are working on making the island totally independent of fossil fuels. Since the Prime Minister launched the plan in 2012, locals have witnessed a 15 percent fall in fuel costs due to the use of solar energy. This is only the beginning and I can already tell that this plan will be very successful.

Bhutan as hidden gem in Asia: to the discovery of the Gross National Happiness.
Bhutan is one of the last countries to have social media introduced within the local population. Nevertheless, it managed to change paradigm of life: from being evaluated by its Gross National Product to the Gross National Happiness Index. This shows the care and attention the country has towards its core values, its people, and the surrounding environment. Moreover, more than 60% of the kingdom will remain forested for all time, plastic bags are illegal, and a significant 26% of the country is protected by national parks and reserves. Which other country would do so?
My favorite DMO and destination with the best practice of sustainability is in Madison, Wisconsin. This destination is very inclusive of all stakeholders and effectively promotes the city to travelers and residents.
